FARMER FIRST IN ACTION: KTDA FOUNDATION LEADS FREE MEDICAL CAMP FOR GATHUTHI TEA CATCHMENT AREA

At KTDA Foundation, we believe that our greatest resource is our people — the hardworking smallholder tea farmers whose commitment keeps Kenya’s tea industry thriving. Guided by the Farmer First Mantra, our efforts remain centered on safeguarding the wellbeing of farmers who form the backbone of the tea value chain. With more than half of all tea farmers now above the age of 60, the risks of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and joint complications continue to rise. Yet, access to quality healthcare in rural areas remains limited and often costly, making preventive care an urgent and essential priority.

Under the Health Pillar of KTDA Foundation, and recognizing the strong link between farmer wellbeing and tea productivity, KTDA Foundation is proud to host a Free Medical Camp for farmers within the Gathuthi Tea Factory catchment area. This initiative is designed to promote early detection, enhance preventive care, and increase health awareness among farmers and their families, ensuring that they remain healthy, productive, and well-supported — true to our Farmer First commitment.

The camp will offer a wide range of services including cancer screening (breast, cervical, and prostate), blood sugar and blood pressure checks, eye screening, general treatment, psychosocial counselling and support, nutrition education, joint and mobility assessments, and referral services for cases requiring advanced care. These services are tailored to address the most common and high-risk health challenges affecting tea farmers, particularly those in older age brackets.

Scheduled for 26th to 28th November 2025 at Wandumbi Dispensary from 8:00am to 5:00pm, the medical camp is organized by KTDA Foundation in partnership with Gathuthi Tea Factory, Majani Insurance Brokers Ltd., Britam, and Lions Eye Hospital. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to improving healthcare access and strengthening the wellbeing of tea-growing communities.

We warmly encourage all farmers and residents within the Gathuthi catchment area to attend in large numbers and take advantage of this important opportunity. Your health is your greatest wealth — and by investing in preventive care, we build stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger tea sector. Farmer First, Always.
