Special Projects Financial Literacy Program for Pluckers

Status- Ongoing

Period – October 2019 to current

Partners: Taylors of Harrogate and Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP)

Expected beneficiaries: 1000 workers

Factories: Imenti & Mungania

The project aims to support factories to design and implement community projects aimed at improving the welfare of hired labour and smallholder tea farmers within their catchment.

As a result of the training, it is expected that the beneficiary tea pluckers will have gained:

  1. Improved budgeting and financial management skills
  2. Ability and understanding of how to generate additional revenue streams
  3. Better health from improved nutrition

As an indirect outcome, the above is also expected to lead to improved productivity and higher overall income from tea production.

Impact and Progress

Imenti Pluckers Programme

  • The project trained 934 pluckers throughout the course of the project. This also translates to close to 3642 household members.
  • The pluckers were supported by Imenti Tea Factory and Fairtrade Africa to purchase pedigree goats for dairy farming. Each group has received two Does and are continuing to share the kids across the group members.

Mungania Pluckers Programme

  • The project trained 867 farmers on improving cooking through access to efficient cooking stoves (Jikokoa & LPG)
  • 293 products were ordered by pluckers and so far 269 have been issued at subsidized rates with 100% repayment rate.
